January 17th 1935

Foxearth is in mourning at the passing of two parishioners. Mr Edward Ellis Harper, aged 56, passed away after a serious illness, he was for 28 years, manager of the mineral water department at the brewery and secretary to the village club for 15 years.
The second death was Mrs Frederick Woods, aged 60 years, she worked at the brewery during the war and at the Cottage for Mrs Ward for 4 years.
She leaves a widow and one son, the former was for many years head gardener at the Cottage for Mr D.Ward.

There was a whist drive at Foxearth in aid of the Nursing Fund, there was only 52 players present. Mr H.E.Ward was M C Prizes - Ladies - Mrs T. Albon-Mrs F.Levick-Miss V.Mansfield. Gents- Mr J.Plumb (Pentlow)-Mr Gardener,(Borley)-Mr F.Chinnery. £ 6 went to the fund.

Bury sugar beet factory has just completed a record campaign,- 450.000 tons of beet processed - £ 900.000 paid to growers - Wages bill - £ 42.000.

Marriage at Borley of Miss Ethel Rose Mays and Mr Arthur Hardy of the Croft, Sudbury.

A licence to sell stamps at Pentlow was granted to Mrs Kent of The Lane, Pentlow.

May 2nd 1935

Halstead Rural District Council. The sum of £ 250 will be borrowed to finance the Foxearth water supply. It was decided to accept a tender of £ 57-10s.for putting in a new pump at Borley.

May 8th 1935

The King's Silver Jubilee was celebrated at Lyston with a garden fete in the Rectory grounds, over 80 people sat down to tea and this was followed by a distribution of tobacco, cigarettes and light refreshments. The Rev S.Fisher made a speech.
Foxearth celebrations were opened by ringers on the bells, in the afternoon sports and games were enjoyed on the village sports ground.
Race for adults - P.C.Arthey - B.Whittle - T.Plumb. Ladies - Mrs H.Ward Mrs T.Albon - Mrs Basset. In the evening a social was held in the village hall where the King's speech was broadcast, there was dancing songs and games. Every child had a jubilee mug and all people over 70 were given 1lb of tea or 2oz of tobacco.

May 16th 1935

Jubilee sports for children at Belchamp Walter were held in a meadow lent by Mr H.Rowe, in the evening an excellent tea in the school room was provided for the children and women also men over 65 were invited.

Jubilee celebrations at Pentlow began with a merry peal of bells and the thanksgiving service at St Pauls cathedral being broadcast in the church. There was a small service at the top off Pentlow hill where a seat has been placed as a permanent memorial, there was a excellent tea in the rectory gardens and the children attended a performance in Cavendish cinema, later in the evening a huge bonfire was lit.

There was an inquest at Cavendish village hall on the body of William George Mitson of Hardy's Yard, Cavendish. Deceased was walking home from work when he was struck from behind by a train and sustained a broken kneck. He worked at Houghton Hall and used the railway line as a means of getting home. He leaves a widow and several children. Accidental death.

Death at Bower Hall, Pentlow of Mr William Playle, aged 49 years.

September 19th 1935

There was an outing to Southend from Belchamp St Pauls in a charabanc owned by Mr Long of Glemsford. They left the Green Man at 8 am and returned to the Half Moon at 9-15. There was a hearty vote of thanks to Bob Tarbun and the licencee, Mr D.W.Shead, for organising the outing. One hour of music followed by R.Hawkins.

September 26th 1935

Marriage at Grundisburgh on Saturday of Mr Basil Edward Payne, second son of Mr and Mrs R.T.B.Payne of Borley, to Miss Edna Evelyn Mugelston, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs William Mugelston of Grundiburgh.

October 4th 1935

The library at Pentlow is giving useful service, books being well used. Mr Lloyd is secretary. The long hut built by Mr and Mrs Kent to house the children from the Country Holiday Fund during the summer is now used during the winter by Pentlow Working Mens club. The club has been formed by through the energy of Mr C.Wordley and Mr Len Perry, Mrs Kent having made the place very comfortable.

November 14th 1935

Dorothy Ellen Bird, a domestic servant was accused of murdering her newly born female daughter at Borley on January 2nd 1934

Detective Sergeant Fabian of New Scotland Yard, said he went to Ropers Farm, Bures, where accused was employed as a domestic servant and spoke to the accused. She replied that a child was born and that is all I know about it. Remanded.
