January 5th 1910

There was a military funeral at Walter Belchamp of Private Arthur Levell aged 39 years, of the depot of Suffolk Regiment, the remains were interred in the churchyard with full military honours on Monday afternoon by permission of Major Brett, commanding officer of the depot. Colour Sergeant Britton and Sergeant Fordham with some of the deceased's old comrades acted as bearers. Drummer Alcock sounded the last post. Deceased served 18 years in the army, 10 in India. He became ill and went on sick furlough, he expired on December 20th. His death was attributed to bronchitis and pneumonia.

February 9th 1910

Belchamp Rural District Council. Work is in progress on the new bridge at West Mill, Foxearth. The old bridge has been destroyed by the heavy floods, it is hoped that the floods will subside to allow work to continue. There was an application by the Rev Fisher of Lyston to allow him to take 30 square feet of approach to his house.- Agreed.

April 6th 1910

Solomon Porter, horse slaughterer, of Bocking, was fined 2s 6d for permitting the carcass of a horse to be exposed at Sible Hedingham April 13th 1910.A meeting of Long Melford Cricket Club was held at the Bull Hotel on Thursday evening. Mr J.W.Pullan, captain, presided. This season matches will be played on the new ground at Melford Hall Park, entry wil be via Hare drift. It was decided to open a subscription list for H.Leeks who has been a tower of strength to the club in recent years and is now stricken with illness.

August 10th 1910

Frederick Wright, drayman, of Pentlow, was charged with stealing a wrist watch. Alice Kemble of Pentlow said she was employed as a house keeper for Mr J.P.Brand of Buntings Farm, she had left the watch hanging in the kitchen of Buntings farmhouse while she went to Cavendish station to meet some friends. She returned to the farmhouse and discovered the watch was missing, she reported the matter to the police.
John Purkis Brand said he left the house went to look at some cattle and on returning he saw def.coming out of the house. Def. was a tenant of some houses he had at Pentlow and had come to pay rents due.- Def. in view of his previous good character was fined 10s.

A good old custom of the harvest supper to celebrate the safe ingathering of harvest was duly honoured in the parish of Foxearth on Monday evening when Mr A.V.Campbell Lambert invited the men from his farms to supper at Foxearth Hall. A bountiful repast was provided with good old time nut brown ale and an ample supply of tobacco. Ample justice was done to the meal. Mr A.V.Campbell Lambert presided with J.Campbell Lambert in support. A enjoyable evening with songs and gramophone records was received with great appreciation.

October 20th 1910

Messrs Ward and Son were again successful at the Brewers Exibition with a first prize and silver medal for bottled pale ale, second prize for oatmeal stout and second prize with pale ale in cask.

January 18th 1911

Sarah Alliston, aged 29, a married woman, was charged with attempting to commit suicide at Pentlow Hall on Dec 28th. Charles Wordley, under gardener at Pentlow Hall, said he saw def.lying in the moat with only her nose showing in four feet of water. He pulled her out and asked her why she had done it, she replied her husband was going to marry another woman. Committed for trial.

A concert was held in the school room at Foxearth in aid of St Leonards Hospital. Proceeds were £ 9 6s 6d.

At the licencing sessions at Hedingham, with reference to the Plough Inn at Belchamp st Pauls, the chairman asked what was being done about the supply of water, Mr Oliver of Sudbury, said a well was being sunk close by.

Death of Miss A.E.Palmer of Lyston Hall. She was a lady of great benevolence whose life was spent uplifting the poor, she will be greatly missed by them and her friends. Funeral was at Elmers End, Beckenham.

On Tuesday night a considerable part of St Mary's Hall, Belchamp Walter, was destroyed by fire. It is in occupation of Mr Borrow. It appears that Mr Borrow jun. was awakened by flames at 1-10 am and found the house and stables adjoining the house alight.Mr Borrow sen.was at once awakened and they proceeded to release liberate the horses and turn out the cattle from the yard. A barley stack, cart shed, fowl house, a stump of hay and quarter of threshed corn were destroyed, also traps, machinery and harness. Some poultry were saved but a few hens, ducks and turkeys were burnt to death, a goat shared their untimely death. The fire brigade from Yeldham arrived at 5-30 but by that time there was not much danger of the fire spreading. This is the fifth outbreak of fire in the vicinity and circumstances point to incendiarism, causing much unease to owners and occupiers in the district.

Messrs Ward and Son of Foxearth Brewery have been successful in the recent International Exhibition of Hygiene in Paris.
They were awarded the Grand Prix and Gold Medal with Diploma for their Pale Ale - Oat meal Stout and a collection of Mineral Waters. It is especially gratifying that our English products are held in high esteem by our French neighbours.

May 17th 1911

Harry Wordley, a roadman from Glemsford, Ernest Brown a factory hand and Bertie Oakley also from Glemsford were summoned for obstructing two police constables in the execution of their duty at Belchamp Otten. Two of the def.were found crouching in a gateway near the road at Otten with guns at 3-30 am. The constable got hold of Wordley to take his gun and Wordley pushed him away constituting a technical assault. All three defendants raised their guns as if to fire and owing to the threatening attitude the constables did not press the matter as there might be bloodshed. The policeman said he knew all three men had been in the army. The chairman said they were lucky they were not on a more serious charge. They were all fined £ 5 with 4s costs.

May 24th 1911

An inquest was held at Belchamp st Pauls on William Amos a farm labourer of Belchamp st Pauls, aged 43 years. Deceased was found dead in a pond by the road side at Ovington on Sunday morning. He had left his work at 5-30 on Saturday and went into the Donkey Inn, he stayed there until 9-15 and walked home with Thomas Golding. On Sunday morning Nathaniel Mason found deceased drowned in a pond by the roadside, Golding said they had parted company in the road. A labourer called Bartrum said he saw dec. stagger about a lot when he left the Donkey.
The landlord of the Donkey said that the dec.was sober. Accidental Death.

On Friday evening being harvest festival at Pentlow church, the following band of ringers rang previous to the service. 480 of grandsire doubles standing, G.Plumb-Pentlow, 2nd Treble-A.Ives Pentlow, W.Wiffen, Pentlow, conductor and 3rd J.Harrington, Belchamp st Pauls, 4th E.Crisp-tenor, Belchamp st Pauls, after the service by the same band, 360 of Bob doubles were rang.

Robbs Farm, Wales End, Cavendish, was sold by Mr Norton to Mr Billington.

November 29th 1911

George Reeve and Alfred Wicks, lab.of Belchamp Walter were charged with stealing 11 cabbages belonging to Mr Thomas Taylor of Gestingthorpe, P.C.Robertson said he stopped defendants with a sack containing 11 cabbages. Fined 5s and 4s costs.
